Trying something new!

Doing new things within your marketing plan is not only a great business strategy to keep your Canadian private practice in sync with the times, but they also help you to diversify and level up your skill set and keep things interesting.

For example, if you were to only post Instagram pictures and infographics on your social media, you would technically be putting yourself out there, but not in the ways that connect the best with your clients.

Consider adding dynamic marketing into your plan, like by creating short videos or adding audio to posts, because it enhances engagement with your clients.

‘Adding video is a really great way for people to see you, hear you, [and] get a feel for what you would be like as a therapist … adding videos to my website [has] been really beneficial because potential clients will watch those and most of the time … they will connect with what we’re saying … and want to work with us.’ – Julia Smith

Podcasting for my Canadian private practice

A podcast is a great, versatile tool that you can use to enhance your marketing efforts, set your practice apart from the rest, offer free resources to your clients, and so much more.

They can be long-form or short-form, whatever length of audio you need to explain ideas or offer content that is tailored to what your audience needs and to what you want to put out.

‘I love podcasting because you don’t have to videotape yourself if you don’t want to … I like to get up all cozy in sweaters and not do my hair, and just sip on some tea … and just chat away!’ – Julia Smith

Podcasting, because of the audio, allows you to focus on the content and quality of what you want to say, rather than being focused on “setting the scene” as you might do with creating a video.

‘I really feel like podcasting is a great way to promote your private practice because it doesn’t take the energy or the time that it can take to have a YouTube channel.’ – Julia Smith

Pros

  • Limitless: you can record a conversation with a guest from anywhere in the world! There is software available that lets you record conversations and merge them into one podcast even if you and your guest are on opposite sides of the continent.
  • Simplicity: all you have to focus on is the conversation. You do not have to hassle and fuss with the set and design.
  • It’s free: offering a podcast is a great way to offer free help to those who need it.

‘This feels really great to know that we can help people that can’t afford our services. So, when somebody emails my virtual assistant asking for help, she can also suggest, “Hey, there’s this podcast! You might find some value in [it]” … it’s a completely free thing that helps your community.’ – Julia Smith

  • SEO boost: your podcast can be published online and link back to your Canadian private practice website, helping to improve and support your growing SEO rankings.
  • Marketing: your growing podcast will greatly support your marketing efforts because it creates new touchpoints for your ideal clients to interact with your content, get to know you, and trust you and your voice – both your physical one and the voice of your brand.

Cons

  • Time-consuming: consider working with podcast “seasons” because it helps you to structure your work into periods of work which then allows periods of rest. Without a structure, you will feel like you always need to be recording, and that can push you to burn out really fast.
  • No Guarantees: there is no guarantee that your podcast will help you to get more clients. So experiment with your ideas by completing a couple of episodes and seeing how it goes.

‘Don’t invest all of your time and energy into it because it might not work. It might not launch well, [or] it might not be a big return on investment for you and you might want to focus your time, money, and energy on other places. So, try it out [to] see how it goes!’ – Julia Smith

  • Expensive: you can bootstrap a podcast and do all the work yourself, however, that would be a large expense of money and effort. Consider hiring a professional or a team to outsource the work to, because a podcast is definitely an investment.
  • A client gamble: people might not like what you say, and your podcast could then push people away instead of bringing them in. However, the people that it does bring in were the best fit for you, so that could be a bonus!

‘If it doesn’t work out, if it hinders my business, I can take it down. Investing in five episodes, I can afford that, and even if it doesn’t help it’s not a big loss. But the potential of a podcast that anybody can listen to for free and get some help with mental health is a win!’ – Julia Smith
